What kind of game is it?

Azmodan is a location-based, World of Darkness-style game. Create a character and, when you choose to enter the game world, use your real-world location to explore the map and discover nearby characters.

It uses slightly adapted Azmodan rules to bring the different supernatural worlds, called spheres, together. Each sphere keeps its own character-creation rules. Azmodan's shared rules help with everyday dice rolls and decide who can see whom on the map; different characters still have their own strengths and limits.

The app, this website and the MUD/MUX are separate projects. The website includes lore and tools connected to the MUD/MUX, our separate text-based game. The app has its own account and progress. A website or MUD account does not automatically sign you into it, and the app's unfinished features do not describe what is available in the MUD/MUX.

Create your first account

1. Open the app. Visit app.azmodan.net and choose Create your account. You do not need to sign into this website first.
2. Choose your player name and passphrase. Your player name is separate from your characters' names. Use a long passphrase you can keep safe, then choose Create local vault. A vault is the app's protected storage on your device.
3. Save your recovery file. Choose Download encrypted recovery. Keep that file somewhere safe and private, outside the browser, and separate from its passphrase. It is your way back if you change device or lose the app's saved information.
4. Check the file you saved. Select it under Saved recovery file, enter its passphrase and choose Verify recovery file. Downloading alone does not complete this check.
5. Activate your account. Once the check succeeds, choose Activate account online. You need an internet connection for this step.
6. Begin a character. Choose one of the character-creation buttons and follow the steps. When your finished character is approved by the Storyteller Server, the app's online rules checker, you can select them and choose Enter game world.

Keep your way back safe. Recovery needs both the file and the passphrase used when it was saved. There is no email password reset for the app. Never send anyone your recovery file or passphrase.

Choose when to share your location

You can set up your account and work on characters without joining the live map. Entering the game world needs an internet connection and your permission to use your location.

While you are in the world, nearby players may see your character and location when the game's rules allow it. Your character's Awareness, the distance between players and the realms they can see affect who appears. Being nearby does not mean every character will be visible.

Choose Stop sharing to leave the live map. Returning to your characters, locking the app or putting it in the background also ends sharing. Use the map only where you feel comfortable sharing your location, and pay attention to your surroundings.

Coming back or using another device?

On the same device and browser, enter your passphrase and choose Unlock vault. If you are asked to reconnect, choose Connect to Storyteller Server.

If your account is not there, choose Restore an account, or Restore from a recovery file on the unlock screen. Select your saved file, enter its passphrase and choose Check and restore. Restore your existing account instead of creating a new one.

Your approved characters can be brought back after you reconnect. Unfinished character drafts stay on the device where you made them; they are not included in the recovery file. Another browser or an installed copy may have separate saved information, so keep your recovery file ready.

Add the app to your home screen

This is optional: you can keep using the app in your browser. First open app.azmodan.net, then choose the app's Install guidance for your device. Add that app address to your home screen.

• iPhone or iPad: open the app in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. If offered, keep Open as Web App enabled.
• Android: open your browser menu and look for Install and create shortcut, then Install. Some browsers call this Install app or Add to Home screen.
• Computer: use Install Azmodan when the app offers it, or look for your browser's install option. In Chrome, open the menu, choose Cast, save, and share, then Install page as app. Menu names can vary.

Some saved information can be opened without a connection. Account activation, reconnecting to the Storyteller Server and the live map need the internet; installing the app does not make the whole game work offline.
